Garden Tour I:
The Balcony

The garden tour starts with the balcony. I'm only hitting the highlights here. Along with what's in the pictures, there's also a fir "tree" in a pot, a eucalyptus, the marjoram/spearmint pot (which you've seen previously), and a bedraggled looking marigold which is recovering from its Gamesville experience. (Well it looked like it might recover. It finally died.)

flower box with orange calendula and other plants

First the flower box which sits on the balcony rail in front of my door. It has the calendula plants and some other residents who aren't blooming now.

Next is the flower stand. It stands outside my door normally, but I've moved it a bit to get it in the light more for this picture. It has a nicotiana and that plant with the purple flowers (whose friend at Gamesville got eaten by aphids) in the top story. In the bottom story, the main feature is a plant which I may have planted, but I certainly can't remember what it is. I'd pull it as a weed, but its vegetation seems to suit the pot well, so I'll see what develops. You can also see a small yellow flower from a creeping zinnia which was the main feature last summer. I got it from a self-serve nursery stand in Groton. It survived through the winter because I took the pot inside. It just barely survived apparently because it is only just now making its appearance. There is also a small vinca which I got from the Gardener's Exchange.

a potted fig tree

Finally there is the fig tree which I got by mail order. It always gives a pretty good fig crop. The figs are kind of small. It is kind of spoiled. I take it in every winter and during the transitional months I take it in and out of the house as the weather changes. A purple coneflower keeps it company. The coneflower is like the chamomile in that it insinuates itself into any neighboring pot it can.

So those are the main features of the balcony. Still to come: a couple plots on the ground floor in the driveway in front of my apartment, the two plots in the front yard and finally the four or so backyard plots.
