My Commute:
The Big Picture (by train mostly)

topographic map with route from Shirley to Waltham traced

Here you see the main outline of my route. Shirley, where I live, is marked at the upper left end of the route and Waltham, where I work, is marked at the lower right end of the route. I cover most of the distance by train. The GPS looks pretty good at this scale. On closer magnification there are several places where it claimed the train left the tracks and careened through the countryside (not true), but for the most part it was accurate.

According to the GPS, the train's maximum speed was 60 miles per hour. Most of the time it traveled significantly under that though. I put the GPS on a south-facing window ledge, and except for a moment in Acton, it didn't have any trouble finding its satellites. It was neat tracking the speed and direction of the train.

The train is owned by Amtrak and run by the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority), or maybe it's the other way around. I've forgotten the name of the company that ran it when it was privately owned a few years back. It will come to me.
