Below are listed entries from Encyclopaedia Britannica's 11th edition (now in the public domain in the United States of America). Most serve as background information for various parts of this website; a few are here as background information for other projects. The entries are extracted entire from the Encyclopaedia (except for Shakespeare where I left out the discussion of portraits, the bibliography and Homer and Pythagoras where I leave out the accents on the Greek, and occasional appearances in various entries of a phonetic alphabet which I reproduce imperfectly). Originally, the signed articles had the author(s) initials — in parentheses — with them. I have filled these out with the full names which are provided elsewhere in the Encyclopaedia. At the bottom of the entries which serve as background to parts of this website are links to the relevant pages.
